Gas prices have soared in the early part of 2000. President Clinton, it has been reported, has contemplated the release of Oil from our strategic reserves in order to put more fuel at the pumps and ease prices.
There is simply NO reason or excuse for the US Government to consider releasing Oil from our strategic reserves over our current Gas pricing situation. Instead - while we await the allied Oil producting Nations to increase oil productions (even an immediate decision to increase production won't lower our prices for months) contact your Senator, Congressman, and the White House, to do the following:
Temporarily lift/eliminate the overburdening GAS TAX!
That's right. There is no reason, with the BUDGET SURPLUS we are continually told about, that the gas tax could not be eliminated for a few months. You might ask, or your elected officials might use as an excuse: How will we fund our Road project obligations? Answer: It's the Budget Surplus STUPID! We all know they are going to spend the money somewhere, it is time they do something beneficial to REAL WORKING CLASS FAMILIES whose budgets are impacted by higher fuel costs as they commute to and from real jobs, pay taxes, pay those elected officials salaries, etc....
Senate considers Gas Tax rollback of at least the 4.3 cents that the Clinton Administration pushed through in 1993 arguing it was necessary to help fight the Budget deficit. The deficit is now a surplus and the need no longer there. A whole lot more than just 4.3 cents could, and should, be trimmed off the Federal Excise Tax on Gasoline. A complete elimination, as I've argued above, could/should be put in place, at least temporarily. We can Fund Roads from other funds available via the current Government Surplus! Contact your Congressional and Senate Representatives today and let them know it is about time to rollback the recent years Tax increases, AT LEAST for starters.
