Sales Tax, Michigan and other States angle at latest Tax Grab: INTERNET SALES
by: Joseph M Lenard

From: Lenard, Joe Sent: Wednesday, December 01, 1999 To: Governor ENGLER Subject: New attempt to collect MI Sales Tax on out-of-state Sales to Michigan residents
I hope that the report I heard yesterday (Tuesday Nov. 30 1999 18:00) was incorrect in that it was reported that you are supporting the addition of a line item or section to attempt to have Michigan residents "voluntarily" [always the first step to strong armed enforcement policies later] pay Michigan Sales and/or Use Tax on product purchased outside of the State of Michigan. This is primarily targeting Internet Sales (Currently, the Internet is tax-free by order of the Internet Tax Freedom Act, signed into law in October 1998.) but will include other items purchased while out of state but are brought back and used within the State of Michigan.

I have the following "leading" questions (I'm sure is NOT also supported in the Bill or Bills that may be pending)...

In closing, I oppose this new Tax grab; especially now while Michigan has a Budget Surplus, a supposed anti-tax Governor, and a Taxation ceiling (Headlee) amendment. I urge any and all who read this notice write you and their locally elected State Officials to express their disdain for this latest attempt into the pocketbooks of Michigan families. We should be reducing the Tax bite to aid families ability to feed, house, and clothe the/their children of Michigan, not take food off of their tables and out of their mouths.
